Alcan to Ocean Icecap Expedition: Gear selection for a glacial ski-traverse

 

Notice the name change? We’ve reversed directions! We’re now officially traveling from the Kluane National Park in the Yukon (starting point: Alcan hwy), up the Kaskawulsh glacier and across the Hubbard, Seward and Columbus glacier into Alaska. We’ll continue on the Bagley Icefield, and then hang a left and try and make it as far down the Bering Glacier as we can. With a 30 mile marshy bushwack from Bering to ocean with extremely heavy packs, not sure we’ll actually be able to make it to the ocean, but we plan on trying…

It’s also time to get gear! For this trip, I’ve decided to go with Scarpa Gea boots (vs. the Dynafit TLT 6 boots, which were lighter but just slightly less comfortable), Tracker 3 beacon, Dynafit Speed Radical bindings mounted on Dynafit Manaslu skis, and a few other odds and ends.
